A Round of Sound: 2014 Mixtape

Now we come to my annual playlist that caps off my list. I find it way to difficult to do a ranking of songs, so this is my way to capture the tracks that defined the year. As always, I try to make a concise playlist that fits on a standard CD-R, so a bit outdated, but DEAL WITH IT. Keep in mind these aren’t necessarily my favorite songs of the year, but rather a mix that I think is a good look at what 2014 had to offer. Also, the order is based on how the songs show up on their respective albums, and is in no way an order of a rank.

This year’s mix consists of 20 songs, which has been typical the last few years, but is a little more varied from year’s past. Seven of the songs come from albums in my top 10, with seven songs from albums in my 11-25 range, leaving the remaining six from those outside my top 25. The lowest ranked album to have a song featured is I Never Learn from Lykke Li, which despite some great moments was an album I found a little too melodramatic for my liking, rendering it 51st in my rankings.

I’ve also created Rdio playlist if that’s more your bag. And finally, this is the 7th straight year Amy Boyd Runner has provided my album art for the mix. It really is a highlight for me every year having her help out, and this year is no different. Great stuff.

#10) Sun Kil Moon – Benji [Caldo Verde; released 2/11/2014]

I’ve never been in a huge fan of Mark Kozelek, musically or personally, but in 2014 he at least impressed me by the former (while still being his usual dickish self thanks to his bizarre feud with The War On Drugs, so halfway there) with Benji, a beautiful collection of songs that pull off the rare feat of being personal yet immensely relatable.

#9) Parquet Courts – Sunbathing Animal [What’s Your Rupture?; released 6/3/2014]

The follow up to last year’s breakout Light Up Gold, Sunbathing Animal is the first of two releases for the band in 2014 (the other as Parkay Quarts) and shows a group maturing, while still retaining the DIY garage-rock ethos. This is a more ambitious album, but as intelligent and catchy as their previous work.

#8) Run The Jewels – Run The Jewels 2 [Mass Appeal; released 10/24/2014]

The year’s best hip-hop album, RTJ2 is the second album from Killer Mike and El-P, who seem to bring the best out of each other whenever they team up. This is a visceral listen, an angry airing of grievances largely needed after the civil unrest that unfortunately defined much of 2014.

#7) Strand of Oaks – HEAL [Dead Oceans; released 6/24/2014]

A similar album, in spirit, to last year’s album of the year Muchacho from Phosphorescent, labelmate Strand of Oaks has created a cathartic gem full of rock ‘n’ roll songs dealing with personal turmoil and nostalgia for the transformative power of rock music.

#6) Against Me! – Transgender Dysphoria Blues [Total Treble; released 1/21/2014]

The first release from the group since lead singer Laura Jane Grace came out as transgender, is as courageous an album as I’ve ever heard. 2014 was a defining year for the transgender community – Jared Leto’s Oscar winning portrayal, Laverne Cox’s Emmy nomination, the Grantland fiasco, the success of Transparent, etc. – and Grace’s honesty shown in these 10 punk-rock songs shines as a beacon of hope for those involved in the movement, as well as those struggling to understand.

#5) Cymbals Eat Guitars – LOSE [Barsuk; released 8/26/2014]

In what I consider 2014’s most underrated album, the New Jersey based quartet’s third, and best, release uses their 90’s indie-rock style to take a spirited look at life and loss in the eyes of someone entering their quarter-life. It’s nine songs of guitar drenched rock, with a heart that elevates this album to astonishing heights.

#4) Spoon – They Want My Soul [Loma Vista; released 8/5/2014]

The first release since their under appreciated 2010 album Transference, the Austin indie-rockers return to form with an album that better fits alongside 2007’s Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, generally thought of as the band’s best work. They Want My Soul is one of 2014’s most consistent records with not a dud in the bunch appeasing all those that felt betrayed by Transference’s deviations.

#3) Sharon Van Etten – Are We There [Jagjaguwar; released 5/27/2014]

An absolute monster of an album, Sharon Vet Etten has created gut-punch of a record full of personal songs that make this the most emotionally draining release of 2014. Self-produced by Van Etten, who felt she had something to prove after 2012’s breakout Tramp was lauded largely due to Aaron Dessner’s involvement, Are We There establishes Van Etten as a monumental voice in indie-rock.

#2) St. Vincent – St. Vincent [Loma Vista; released 2/25/2014]

Using David Byrne inspired theatrics, the fourth, and possibly best, album from Annie Clark is another incredible release from my favorite artist. Clark has always been able to pair her anxious skittishness with accessible pop tunes – while shredding on guitar, of course – and St. Vincent is no different, only this time showing even greater ambition and innovation from one of the most talented songwriters and musicians we have today.

#1) The War On Drugs – Lost In The Dream [Secretly Canadian; released 3/18/2014]

In what should come as no surprise, my album of the year is the majestic and stunning Lost In The Dream, the third album from Philadelphia band The War On Drugs. Adam Granduciel has crafted his masterpiece, 10 meticulously constructed Springsteen and Petty inspired classic-rock songs, serving as an expression of Granduciel’s demons, all the while being completely devoid of pretensions. With half the tracks over 6 minutes long, most build up to a climax of various proportions, whether they involve an emphatic “Woo!” and guitar solos of my song of the year “Red Eyes” or a Bruce Hornsby styled saxophone solo of “Eyes To The Wind”, but all do so organically. There’s no contrivances here as this is real, life-affirming, stuff which invites the listener to come as you are and get out of it whatever you feel you need.


A Round of Sound: 2011 Mixtape

Finally, it’s time for the annual playlist that caps off my little countdown. Rather than do a ranking of favorite songs, I choose to compile what I think is a good representation for the year in music, all on an 80 minute CD-R. There’s plenty of songs I had to leave off the mix due to their length or lack of fit, so this is by no means my top 19 songs of the year. I do want to give a shout out the bookends of this disc which are from a couple bands who I finally found a way to get on my year end mixtape. Martime is not the kind of band that will ever challenge for high ranking in my albums list, but they are still one of my personal favorites because they write damn good pop-rock songs with “It’s Casual” serving as a great example. Human Hearts was another very good album from them and it’s been long overdue finding a place for one of their tracks on my mixtape. Likewise for The Mountain Goats, who are pretty much a top 25 staple for me when they release an album. John Darnielle is one of the best songwriters in the world today, and “High Hawk Season” is one of the more stunning songs of his career and the easy standout on All Eternals Deck. Also, kudos to Los Campesinos! who make their third appearance on one of my year end mixtapes, breaking a tie with numerous other bands to give them the overall lead.

Other notes: As I said, I managed to squeeze 19 tracks onto this years mix, up one from 2010. The lowest ranked album that has a song appear on the mix comes from the aforementioned Human Hearts by Maritime which was my #40 album of the year. In addition to that track, there are 3 other songs coming from albums outside my top 25. There are six tracks representing my #11-#25 albums, and 9 tracks from my top 10 albums. The only top 10 album not represented on the mix is Burst Apart from The Antlers. And as usual, the order of the Mixtape is not a ranking, but rather just the best order I came up with.

Below, you’ll see the tracklist, and after the jump you can listen to every track if you so choose. This is the 4th straight year she’s helped me out, so as gratitude, I’ve included a link to her pop-culture blog as a permanent fixture over under my links section. She likes to call me Don Draper during the design process, which I consider much more of a compliment than I think she’s intending, so it’s the least I could do. You’re welcome.

Top Albums of 2011: #6 thru #10

#10) The Antlers – Burst Apart [Frenchkiss; released 5/10/2011]

It’s impossible to discuss Burst Apart without first mentioning this album’s predecessor Hospice, my #2 Album of 2009. Perhaps that’s a bit unfair, but when you release an album as stunning as Hospice, there’s bound to be some call backs, and well, concerns as to if a follow up release can vindicate all the praise lavished upon this young group. With Burst Apart, The Antlers have proven their music can be just as emotionally resonant without the help of heavy subject matter in highly conceptual form. Part of that is due to Peter Silberman’s falsetto which is still as fragile as ever while remaining inviting. The songs on Burst Apart are more standard in their song structure making this disc an easier listen than Hospice, but it doesn’t give up the haunting atmospherics that makes their music so striking. Now a fully realized band, Burst Apart is their first album written as a whole, not just Silberman, and it’s easy to see how this group has gelled together to form a band that can now stand on their own merits as musicians and not just kings of sorrow.

#9) Cults – Cults [Sony; released 6/7/2011]

The concern with bands who land a major label deal due to an internet hit in their infancy is pretty obvious. Does this band really have the songwriting chops to produce an entire album of this stuff? Or will they just be another one-hit internet wonder that’s all too common these days? (We’ll soon get that answer about Lana Del Rey.) It’s a question that unfairly sets a band up for failure, with seeming loads of criticism heading their way from the start due to all the skepticism. For Cults, they put any of those concerns to bed immediately on their debut album with opening track “Abducted”, one of the best songs of the year, and followed it up with an album full of potential singles that can all stand right up there with “Go Outside”, the song that catapulted them to the forefront of indie-pop. Cults is an album that displays all the catchiness and hooks of a band sure of themselves, and well, extremely good pop songwriters. Are the songs derivative? Sure. But the use of 60’s girl-pop influences do convey a sense of nostalgia on this record that makes it so charming and deeper than what you hear on the surface. There’s a bit of tragedy and heartbreak in the lyrics and a sense of vulnerability in Madeline Follin’s vocals, but she doesn’t beat you over the head with it like some of her genre peers can’t help but do. Cults is a mature and masterful album, the year’s best debut, from a band that still has a lot of room to go. They’re here to stay.

#8) Fleet Foxes – Helplessness Blues [Sub Pop; released 5/3/2011]

The sophomore album from these woodsy harmonizers is one that overcame quite the obstacles to even see the light of day. After their highly successful debut album in 2008 (my #3 album that year), Fleet Foxes began work on their follow up, but a bout with writers block from lead man Robin Pecknold didn’t help things along. Neither did the scrapping of every song after the initial recording, which meant starting from scratch in the studio. This well-documented recording process for Helplessness Blues is a testament to the painstaking efforts put forth by Fleet Foxes in creating their art. But when released, the final product is an album full of lush folk songs that sonically expands on everything these guys were doing with their debut, creating a truly beautiful album. The songs on Helplessness Blues have been polished to perfection, while not sacrificing their intimacy and contain all the majesty that made these guys so endearing in the first place.

#7) St. Vincent – Strange Mercy [4AD; released 9/13/2011]

I’ve always wondered what it would be like if a successful but relatively non-mainstream artist showed up on American Idol in front of the audition panel.  It would kind of be a dream of mine to see the panel have no idea who the artist was, get on their high horse and criticize in their usual condescending way, unaware the whole time that the musician in front of them has already seen loads of success and contains more talent in his or her pinky finger than any of American Idol’s winners in its run. The thing is though, this isn’t what would happen with with Annie Clark, aka St. Vincent. Clark has a gorgeous face, a killer voice, and can absolutely whale on the guitar, all of which is pretty evident right away. That’s why it’s so refreshing to hear such complex yet accessible tunes coming from an artist like St. Vincent. Strange Mercy is her third full-length and contains all her usual sweet yet anxiety filled songs that make her one of the most sophisticated songwriters going today. The formula remains the same on most her songs here: a tender verse/chorus buildup into a freak-out of sorts all the while capturing the introspection of a songstress at the top of her lyrical game. With all due respect to Adele (and others), there isn’t a female artist creating more interesting music in the world today. And it’s getting time that we need to start thinking about dropping the female qualifier.

#6) tUnE-yArDs – w h o k i l l [4AD; released 4/19/2011]

Let’s get this out of the way: this is a weird album and Merril Garbus is a strange woman. But that’s what makes her tUnE-yArDs project so appealing and intriguing. This is the second album from Garbus following up her breakout debut BiRd-BrAiNs in 2009 which announced her presence as an experimental-pop artist, but limiting her to just a pop musician doesn’t do nearly enough justice to the type of music Garbus is creating here. What she’s done on w h o k i l l is create an “everything but the kitchen sink” album, blending so many genres that it’s really too many to even list. She has a clear knack for songwriting and despite all the bizarre tunes, they really are some damn good pop songs. Garbus carries a confidence on w h o k i l l that is evident throughout, but never once hints at self-indulgence, and dismissing Garbus as another freak-folk musician is to dismiss her talent in some of the simplest ways, most notably her voice. All you have to do is listen to a track like “Powa” with it’s lo-fi production and numerous musical techniques throughout which all leads to an fantastic vocal breakdown where Garbus hits a note that can only be described as Mariah Carey-esque. Weird yes, but when it’s this fascinating, it’s a welcome oddity.

A Round of Sound: 2009 Mixtape

Now that the countdown is complete, all that is left is to present my 2009 Mixtape, an annual mix of the songs that helped shape the past year in music.  This is maybe becoming my favorite part of my yearly top albums tradition because it’s fun to see what tunes I can pack into an 80 minute disc.  I started doing this on my own just to make a mix cd of some of my favorite songs of the year to keep for listening in my car, but it has evolved into a way for me to kind of summarize the best music of the year in just a “mixtape” form, especially since I find it pretty impossible to do a ranking of the best songs of the year.  And people seem to enjoy it, so here we are again.  By the way if you want to see my complete top 25 Albums of 2009 on one nice, put together page, head on over to my Amazon.com list to give it a look.

So, here’s some stats about the mix.  This year I packed 19 songs on the disc (down one from last year’s 20), but as usual this does not necessarily mean these are my 19 favorite songs of the year.  There a plenty of songs that I had to leave off because they were too long, or maybe they just didn’t fit with the mix.  Also, as usual the order here is how they appear on my mix, but it is not a ranking.  The songs are placed based on how they appear on their respective albums.  For this year, 9 of the songs are off albums in my top 10 (Antony & the Johnsons is the only top 10 album not represented).  Five of the songs are from albums in my #11-#25 range and two songs come from albums outside my top 25.  The lowest ranking album with a song in the mix is Set ‘Em Wild, Set ‘Em Free by Akron/Family (ranked #44) with “River”.  And finally, three songs (“Blood Bank”, “My Night With The Prostitute From Marseille”, and “It Gets Your Body Movin'”) are songs off of EPs, and thus came from albums not eligible to be in my rankings.  Most of these songs have been featured somewhere on this blog in the past, or in the top albums countdown, but now here they are all in one place!

Top Albums of 2009: #5 and #6

#6) Dirty Projectors – Bitte Orca [Domino; released 6/9/2009]

All those first time Dirty Projectors listeners who picked up Bitte Orca after hearing of it’s “accessibility” from the reviews had to be scratching their heads after one spin of the disc.  Make no mistake about it; this is a weird album. However, by DP’s standards, the strangeness is scaled back to an enormous degree, even to the point where some first time listeners would be immediately drawn in. Notice I said some, because Bitte Orca is a definitely a polarizing listen, but those that accept the eccentricities are rewarded with an exhilarating listen and certainly one of the year’s best.  Frontman Dave Longstreth loves the human voice as an instrument and for Bitte Orca he gives his girls the chance to shine on these 9 songs, none more prevalent than album centerpieces “Stillness Is The Move” and “Two Doves”, the former being one of the best tracks of 2009 with it’s R&B grooves and Amber Coffman led vocals.  Bitte Orca is a refreshing release from the Brooklyn-based art rockers that while more accessible than previous efforts, still contains the complex arrangements and quirkiness to satisfy even the most avant-garde hipsters.

#5) St. Vincent – Actor [4AD; released 5/5/2009]

In an interview this past summer Annie Clark, aka St. Vincent, was approached with the thought that she could “skate by” with her talent, voice, and looks to write “really easy stuff” and be just as successful.  While flattered, Clark didn’t agree and thankfully for all of us, she has chosen to use her talent to become one of the most creative musicians going today and her sophomore album Actor has vaulted her to the top of my list of favorite female artists.  A former Sufjan Stevens tour cheerleader and member of Polyphonic Spree, the Brooklyn-by-way-of-Texas musician composes smart and abstract pop-rock songs that are sweet but come with a hint of dementia.  Clark’s tunes are complex but melodic and with her voice, I dare say even beautiful at times.  Possibly no song encapsulates what Actor does so well better than “Marrow”, with its initial woodwinds before evolving in some sort of sinister wordplay and then exploding into a chorus that no one should be able to pull off; but Clark does so as second nature.  The song employs the distorted instrumentation that St. Vincent is becoming know for and takes the song to a completely unexpected level. It’s brilliant.  There’s a bit of everything on Actor, from the straightforward rock of “Actor Out of Work” to the glorious harmonies that close out “The Party”, but when it all comes together, there’s no doubt that it’s a defining release for the art-pop genre.

Mid-2009 Music Awards

A little something I like to do every year is dole out some awards for the music up to the halfway point of the year.  Nothing too detailed, just a little summary.  As usual for all my lists, the only albums I’m including are albums that I own and are currently in my itunes library.  And of course all this can change as I listen to albums more, but this is what I’m feeling so far for 2009.  Enjoy!

Antony & the Johnsons – The Crying Light

  • It’s a beautiful and affecting listen, which was to be expected from Antony Hegarty.  It was the first great release of the year and has stuck around to now.  I already mentioned in my 1st quarter of ’09 wrap-up…nothing more to add to that really.

Loney, Dear – Dear John

  • One of my most listened to albums so far this year.  It doesn’t deserve any album of the year or even top 10 talk, but I think it deserves more attention than it’s getting.

Biggest Disappointment:

The Appleseed Cast – Sagarmatha

  • They left behind their melodic pop hooks that made Peregrine so good, and went back to their post-rock instrumental days with bland results.  Best description I’ve heard was that it’s like Explosions in the Sky tried to make an Appleseed Cast album…not what I was hoping for.

  • Already mentioned this one here, but the more I thought about it, the more I concluded that it probably is my biggest surprise of the year.

  • I just haven’t put enough time into this one to get a reading on it.  Some of it has some early Built to Spill indie feel to it, which deserves my attention.
